Why Good Audio Is Half the Video: Tips from a Soundie

Because No One Notices Good Sound—Until It’s Bad

When people picture “video production,” they usually think in images—cinematic shots, beautiful lighting, sleek camera moves. But here’s the truth every pro crew knows: Bad audio kills a good video faster than any shaky shot ever could. We’ve seen it happen. The visuals are stunning, the edit sings—but the sound? Harsh, echoey, distant. And suddenly, the whole thing feels amateur.

Poor Audio = Poor Perception

Audiences might forgive a bit of handheld wobble.
They won’t forgive muffled dialogue, distorted peaks, or background hum.
It feels cheap—even when the rest of the video isn’t.

In brand, government, and corporate content, that perception matters. If your sound isn’t clean, your message gets lost—or worse, ignored.

Getting It Right on the Day

Sound is 90% preparation and listening. At Alucinor, our soundos are trained to hear the stuff most people overlook—and fix it before anyone yells “rolling.”

Here’s how we keep things clean:

  • Always use external mics. The built-in mic on your phone or camera isn’t enough. Use both a lavalier and shotgun mic to cover different audio profiles and back each other up.
  • Monitor with headphones. Always. Automatic audio levels can result in widely varying volume. You need to actually listen—not just hope.
  • Control the environment. HVAC hum, fridge buzz, passing trucks—if it’s noisy, we fix it or shut it off. Sound plays just as much a role as the background visual when it comes to selecting locations for filming interviews.
  • Adapt. Small room with echo? Busy street? Can’t turn off the aircon? Our team knows how to adjust mic placement, record backup takes, or work with talent to get it done without slowing the day down.

You don’t need to stress about sound on set. That’s what we’re here for.

Polish in Post—Don’t Try to Repair

We mix and master in ProTools to broadcast spec—but the best post work starts with clean input. Good audio is way easier to sweeten than it is to save.

We’ll still:

  • EQ and compress for warmth and clarity
  • Reduce hum or hiss where needed
  • Balance dialogue, music, and ambient audio so it sounds natural—not like a mess of competing tracks
  • Ensure all sound mixes on spec — broadcast, cinema and online.

But if the raw sound is poor? There’s only so much you can do.

Sound Is Invisible—Until It Isn’t

Good sound isn’t about flashy tech or plugins—it’s about ears, instincts, and experience.

Our in-house sound team doesn’t just “capture” audio.
They place mics with purpose.
They know how to keep talent relaxed.
They know when a take sounds off before the rest of the crew notices.

And that makes all the difference.

When sound is done right, no one comments on it.
When it’s wrong—even slightly—everyone feels it.

So Don’t Make Sound an Afterthought

You’re already investing in the shoot. Don’t let bad audio undercut it. Make sound part of your plan—from the first pre-prod meeting to the final mix. We can help. With location sound, post-production audio, or a complete video + sound production crew, we’ve got your back (and your ears).
