Why we left RED cinema cameras for the BMD Ursa Mini Pro G2 and the BMPCC 6k

THE URSA MINI PRO G2 & THE BMPCC 6K WHY WE LEFT RED FOR BLACKMAGIC DESIGN CINEMA CAMERAS In 2008 we purchased two JVC HD111E camcorders for around $14,500 AUD. They shot 1280x720p video at around 20mbps... on DV tape. Less than two years later we sold one of them for $2500 and purchased a 5D Mark II - a revolutionary full frame DSLR capable of 1080p video recording at approx 38mbps data rate. At the end of 2012 we picked up a barely [...]

Why Passion Projects are important for Corporate & Commercial Filmmakers

PASSION PROJECTS THEIR IMPORTANCE FOR CORPORATE & COMMERCIAL FILMMAKERS We are in post-production on 'Evenfall', our first (purely creative non commissioned) narrative short film in five years. It's got me reflecting on how much I've gained from the process of making it and the importance of creative passion projects in our lives and careers as filmmakers. What does a Red Scarlet-W owner think of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K???

THE BLACKMAGIC POCKET CINEMA CAMERA 6k DEAN SHARE'S HIS THOUGHTS (AS A RED SCARLET-W SHOOTER) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtjYFHb9XZg&t=590s I didn't see this coming and I'm not going to lie, these specs at this price is OUTSTANDING VALUE! I share my honest thoughts on this development as someone who shoots on and has invested in a far more expensive camera system - the Red Scarlet-w (when I'm not hiring something else).

Why and how we may be leaving Adobe Premiere Pro after 15+ years

ADOBE PREMIERE PRO 15+ years... Is it time to break up? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=573u_EP2wRs&t=7s After 15+ years with Adobe Premiere Pro we are seriously looking at dumping Premiere Pro entirely in favour of Davinci Resolve. Firstly due to the constant crashing and lack of stability with the software (constantly encountering new bugs), and secondly due to a growing dissatisfaction with their subscription model which is severely lacking in value now compared to Resolve. Resolve has always been industry leading colour grading software but it's gone [...]

Why a Red Scarlet-w?

Why a Red Scarletw?   Over 4 years ago I wrote a blog about why we were purchasing a Scarlet-x digital cinema camera. A MASSIVE step up in performance and cost from our then current Canon 5D Mark ii. Well four and a half years since the purchase that camera is still our workhorse. 4k 24/25 fps and 3k 48 fps. We’ve shot everything under the sun with it – music clips, documentaries, shorts, green screen, TVC’s, even stills in 5k. We’ve yet to have an issue with the [...]

Transition from Canon 5D Mark II to RED Scarlet – Workflow challenges and changes

If you’re looking at investing in a raw camera system, specifically RED and are predominantly using Canon DSLR’s or Sony FS100/700 (or something similar), you may get something out of the lesson’s I’m learning. If you’re not into cameras or post production, this blog is probably not for you :) It’s fair to say myself and Shane have shot more hours of footage on a Canon 5D Mark II than any other camera. However, as detailed in a previous blog, ‘Why a Red Scarlet?’ - we eventually decided we [...]
