THE URSA MINI PRO G2 & THE BMPCC 6K WHY WE LEFT RED FOR BLACKMAGIC DESIGN CINEMA CAMERAS In 2008 we purchased two JVC HD111E camcorders for around $14,500 AUD. They shot 1280x720p video at around 20mbps... on DV tape. Less than two years later we sold one of them for $2500 and purchased a 5D Mark II - a revolutionary full frame DSLR capable of 1080p video recording at approx 38mbps data rate. At the end of 2012 we picked up a barely [...]
THE BLACKMAGIC POCKET CINEMA CAMERA 6K 10 REASONS WHY WE CHANGED OUR MIND (AND BOUGHT ONE) Resident Documentary shooter and Narrative Director Dean Butler explains why and how he changed his mind and purchased the BMPCC 6k.
THE BLACKMAGIC POCKET CINEMA CAMERA 6k DEAN SHARE'S HIS THOUGHTS (AS A RED SCARLET-W SHOOTER) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtjYFHb9XZg&t=590s I didn't see this coming and I'm not going to lie, these specs at this price is OUTSTANDING VALUE! I share my honest thoughts on this development as someone who shoots on and has invested in a far more expensive camera system - the Red Scarlet-w (when I'm not hiring something else).
ST JOHN AMBULANCE WA VR First Aid Skills Launch Video It was great to be a part of the launch for St John Ambulance's revolutionary VR and App First Aid Skills experience. Tasked with producing a video that would highlight what the product offered as well as introducing it to the public, we collaborated with the team at St John to come up with a concept in which the talent would be shown to interact in the real world and the virtual world. To achieve [...]
SARAH AVALIA THROUGH WITH YOU MUSIC VIDEO Directed, shot, cut and graded by Dean Butler. "Because this was a one-man-band shoot I opted for the C200 for gimbal shots (when the budget allowed - there's a few gh5 shots by the wheat field) due to the outstanding dual pixel autofocus and the superb image quality when shooting raw. Shooting on F1.2 on a 50mm prime on a gimbal and holding focus was a revelation... Combining Canon with Red footage - it's like [...]

Why a Red Scarletw? Over 4 years ago I wrote a blog about why we were purchasing a Scarlet-x digital cinema camera. A MASSIVE step up in performance and cost from our then current Canon 5D Mark ii. Well four and a half years since the purchase that camera is still our workhorse. 4k 24/25 fps and 3k 48 fps. We’ve shot everything under the sun with it – music clips, documentaries, shorts, green screen, TVC’s, even stills in 5k. We’ve yet to have an issue with the [...]
We had the pleasure of working with the very talented singer/songwriter Amy Sugars making the music video for her new single 'Halloween.' Shot in Fremantle (Perth) Western Australia, Amy's vision for her clip allowed us to explore visual territory we hadn't really delved into before. Amy was fantastic to work with, everything you could hope for. Professional, fun and willing give her all (including lying down in the ocean shallows and not getting angry when I didn't use to footage even though I kind of told her to) - all the [...]
TVCs are certainly something Alucinor wants to do more of. Dean received a phone call from Kiya at Market Creations in early March advising they wanted to shoot a TV advertisement for the Geraldton based company GHS Solutions. A 2 person crew (Dean & I) would need to fly to Geraldton for a 1 day shoot. A script had been provided by Market Creations and we would need to shoot 3 members of the company delivering the lines from the script as well as a voice over for the [...]
On what was undeniably a very challenging shoot we found ourselves contending with heat, dust, glaring sunlight, strong winds and filming around learners operating heavy machinery for this TVC (Scary!... But they were very careful of us and we kept a safe distance most of the time). Changing lenses was a tricky process, we were literally covered in red dust at the end of the shoot but all the gear held up beautifully. The advertisement, shot in the hills just outside of Perth was an exercise in little prep [...]
Our Perth made short drama Absolution has continued its tour of the international film festival circuit throughout North America and now Europe. Following screenings at VIFF (Vancouver International) and Pasadena International, Absolution has been received official selection from Kansas City International Film Festival, Media Film Festival (Pennsylvania, USA) and Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival (Ireland). Huge thank you to all involved. It was only with the support of dedicated, talented volunteers (cast and crew) that this film was able to be made. Teaser Trailer: https://vimeo.com/113062936 [...]
