2012 was a big year for us. Although we went full time with Alucinor in 2011, 2012 was the first year we worked full time with Alucinor Productions for the entirety of the year. This resulted in a massive increase in the amount of work we began putting out under our own name.
I haven’t listed everything, but here’s a few of the highlights:
A 77 minute (60 minutes drama) dvd/web series produced for Legal Aid WA. The drama chapters took 11 days straight to shoot and the documentary chapters were shot in metro and regional locations simultaneous to post production on the dramas. To help us through the massive task we had the ever reliable Jason North on sound and the super talented Kristen Ashton ala Addicted to Glamour on makeup.
The videos attracted the attention of the 7:30 report, and the unexpectedly high quality (from a film and legal resource perspective) meant that Legal Aid in Queensland and Victoria would both roll out the DVD’s in their states.
Shot in 2011 and abandoned for over 6 months due to commitments on When Separating. This is the piece that brought Stephen Burge into the team and got us out shooting in a narrative drama style again. A good way to warm up for When Separating. It was shot mostly with the crew on camera with girl friends and fiancé’s helping massively behind the scenes. So much so that they spent half an hour in the Swan river on an early October morning for one quick shot.
I’m happy with the way the film turned out but I would love to see it get more views and get the message of doing online video different (through cinematic storytelling) to more businesses. As too often very generic (and boring to shoot and watch) presenter style delivery is pushed by businesses and it’s just not that engaging. Online video content is here to stay, and the quality and ingenuity of them needs to keep lifting to hold an audience’s attention. Hopefully 2013 will see more online videos by us utilising cinematic storytelling.
Holly Denton – Another Tomorrow and Chocolate Overdoses
Director and Actor: Passions, Process and Intimacy
Our first feature length documentary film with distribution. Director and Actor was filmed over three months from August to October in 2011 and took roughly 2 months to edit (in 2012) whilst juggling other projects. It’s out in the wild now distributed by Contemporary Arts Media (Artfilms).
Often in film or video production you can get very caught up in the technical side of things, camera specifications, colour grading, special effects etc. This project required a total shift away from that. The focus was completely on working with actors and gaining a greater understanding and appreciation for the art of acting and directing (whether it be for theatre or film).
Shane worked with all the Wildcats players shooting and editing the game time video for the Perth Wildcats shown at the Perth Arena before every Wildcats game. It was seen by over 12,000 people at the first game alone and has been by many more since. He also created the player’s statistics screens and titles shown during each home game.
Our first love is film, telling stories on screen – whether they be shorts or features. However for the past few years whilst we’ve made projects in a drama style, we haven’t actually made any short narrative films, unless you count Perth Fiction (which I don’t). In my third year studying film and video at Uni (2007) I wrote and directed four and was involved in various roles on others. Although we’ve been busy, my biggest regret when it comes to film and video is not writing and making more short films over the past few years. After all we are looking to make a feature before hitting the big 30! Time for a change.
So on that note, expect to see short films coming from Alucinor Productions in 2013 and beyond!
Happy Belated New Year!!
